Description

Here is my first attempt at the Orion Nebula from a Bortle 1 remote site. Incredible the difference a truly dark sky makes. Turns out the M42 region includes emission nebulae (red), reflection nebulae (blue), dark nebulae (brown) and lots of dust (grey)!

The base image is a four panel mosaic, each panel being just under four hours each of 3 minute exposures. Laid on top of this is an image of just the central region, consisting of over five hours of 30 second exposures in order to obtain detail in the bright center without blowing out the highlights.

The link under the image is to a full size, zoomable image on my website.
